Web 2.0 Companies Core Competencies:
  • Services, not packaged software, with cost-effective scalability
  • Control over unique, hard-to-recreate data sources that get richer as more people use them
  • Trusting users as co-developers
  • Harnessing collective intelligence
  • Leveraging the long tail through customer self-service
  • Software above the level of a single device
  • Lightweight user interfaces, development models, AND business models

I can honestly tell you this felt like a computer college course. I'm just missing the link for eCollege quizzes...

Truly, I learned more from this article than I can talk about. I am comfortable using some of these tools and very comfortable with current Internet technology. This article helped globalize the big picture. I can almost discuss the content of this article with intelligent vocabulary. Time will enable the research and vocab to do so.


The placement of Google between the pc itself and the destination content server was a brilliant visualization. I didn't really have a concept of what it was other than a "search engine." The data management side of it never really occurred to me although I use it multiple times a day.

I also liked the breakdown of the reasoning behind 2.0. These characteristics express the philosophy very effectively although the trusting of users as co-developers is hard for me to accept so far.

Credibility is a key component of the classes I teach involving research, and I still tell my students not to cite Wikipedia as a credible source because of its openness to hackers and the lack of credible editing.

I suppose we'll see how things change!
